Light City 2017 to feature Biz Markie and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, new art installations

'The Color Purple'

The touring production of "The Color Purple" will bring Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning story to the stage with Miss Celie, Shug Avery, Harpo, Mister and a cast of spirited singers and dancers in gospel, jazz and blues songs including "Push Da Button," "Somebody Gonna Love You" and "African Homeland." Why go: Tony Award-winner Marsha Norman's adaptation for the stage is just as memorable as Walker's novel and Steven Spielberg's film. Reconsider: If you are not a fan of musicals even if you loved the book and/or the movie. Details: 7 p.m. Sunday at Star Plaza Theatre, 8001 Delaware Place, Merrillville, Ind.; $45-$55; 800-745-3000, ticketmaster.com; and Feb. 8 at Center for the Performing Arts, Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park; $15-$65; 708-235-2222, centertickets.net
