Nicole Mitchell

Come this weekend, former Chicago flutist Nicole Mitchell will unveil her third orchestral work in less than a year. This is quite an achievement, by any measure, with the biggest piece of the three to have its world premiere Sunday afternoon at Wentz Concert Hall, in Naperville, with a repeat performance Monday evening at Symphony Center. Scored for solo flute, orchestra and chorus, "Harambee: Road to Victory" will tax even Mitchell's increasing prowess with a pen (which was sharpened with the premieres of her orchestral works "Flight for Freedom" in December in Chicago and "Stealing Freedom in Broad Daylight" in New York last June).3 p.m. Sunday at Wentz Concert Hall of North Central College, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville; 7:30 p.m. Monday at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave.; $35-$45 at Wentz; $26-$96 at Symphony Center; 312-236-3681 ext. 2 or chicagosinfonietta.orgRead the full Nicole Mitchell interview
