Amanda Macaluso's overtime goal gave the fourth-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Penn State in the semifinals of the American Lacrosse Conference tournament Friday in Baltimore.
Macaluso turned the net to score after 2 minutes, 15 seconds of the 6-minute overtime. The Wildcats eventually would run out the final 2:46 of the game by keeping the ball amidst a succession of Penn State fouls.
The Wildcats (16-2) meet No. 2 Florida (18-1) in Sunday's final.
The Gators, who routed Ohio State 17-3 in their semi, handed Northwestern the worst loss in the Kelly Amonte Hiller era (22-4) two weeks ago in Gainesville.
A sluggish Northwestern offense kept turning the ball over, wasting several opportunities to take command against a Penn State team it had beaten 11-3 earlier in the season.
This was the Wildcats' 16th straight win over the 8th-ranked Nittany Lions (11-6).
