Northlake man gets 45 years for killing stepfather

Special to the Tribune

A 34-year-old Northlake man pleaded guilty today and was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of his stepfather.

Lorenzo Mercado-Perez has no prior criminal history, and no motive for the shooting was given during the hearing at the Cook County courthouse in Maywood before Judge Noreen Love.

Prosecutors said the evidence showed that Jose Diaz, 55, was sitting at the kitchen table with his wife in their Northlake home at 11:20 p.m. March 25, 2010, when Mercado-Perez, his stepson, arrived home from work.

Mercado-Perez locked the kitchen door, then pulled a loaded .38-caliber handgun from his pocket and fired all the rounds at Diaz, hitting him in the head, chest and shoulder.

Mercado-Perez then called 911 and said he had just killed his stepfather.
