'Newsies' will be here for Christmas 2014

Extra! Extra!  The "Newsies" are coming to Chicago!

Disney announced Wednesday that the Broadway musical about striking New York newspaper boys, a highly successful stage version of the flop movie, will have its much-anticipated national tour, replete with a multi-week Chicago engagement from Dec. 10, 2014 through Jan. 5, 2015 at the Bank of America Theatre, 18 W. Monroe St.

"Newsies," known for its exuberant and exciting dance sequences featuring attractive and energetic young men doing Christopher Gattelli's Tony Award-winning moves, has been something of a sleeper hit for Disney, exceeding expectations at the box office, first at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and then at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway, where it has  played for almost 700 performances.

The tour, to be directed by Jeff Calhoun, kicks off next fall; single tickets for Chicago are not yet on sale through broadwayinchicago.com
