Motorola Mobility closing Texas plant

Tribune staff report

Motorola Mobility, the Chicago-based company now owned by Google, is closing its Texas plant that it designed to be the center American smartphone manufacturing.

The plant has only been open for a year, and already shed more than 75 percent of its workforce. The factory currently has 700 workers, but at its peak it had almost 4,000.

Google agreed four months ago to sell the Motorola phone business to Chinese computer maker Lenovo for $2.9 billion. That deal is expected to close later this year.

Motorola Mobility last month moved its headquarters to the Merchandise Mart from Libertyville.
