A Hammond teen shot this morning in an armed robbery in the Far South Side's West Pullman neighborhood has died from his injuries, police said.
The incident took place just after 8 a.m. in the 12700 block of South Union Street, police said. Initial reports that the incident was a carjacking were inaccurate.
Instead, police believe that the 17-year-old victim went to the scene intending to sell auto parts to people there, said Chicago Police Officer Rober Perez, a police spokesman.
When he arrived, he was robbed and shot by two armed assailants. Details were murky, but during the incident the victim got into the suspects' car and drove off, Perez said.
The victim was later treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at about 11:45 a.m., according to police.
He was identified as Jose Serrano of Hammond, Ind., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The two assailants fled the scene before police arrived. Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
