A Northwest Side man has died following a crash on the Edens Expressway in Northbrook last night.
Ersin Rolando Aguirre was behind the wheel of a 1995 Chevrolet Prizm on the outbound I-94, also known as the Edens spur ramp, when he stopped the car near Waukegan Road, possibly in an attempt to use a "crossover" lane, according to Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. David Schneider.
At 5:37 p.m. a Subaru Impreza that was also outbound apparently didn't see him and plowed into the driver's side of the Prizm, according to Schneider.
It was not known if Aguirre was trying to turn around or why he was in that restricted area.
"There is an emergency crossover lane there,"’ Schneider said. "He was perpendicular to traffic."
Aguirre, 40, of the 4300 block of North Drake Avenue in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood, was taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview where he was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The 72-year-old Lincolnshire woman driving the Subaru was hospitalized at Highland Park Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Neither vehicle had passengers, Schneider said.
No one was ejected and Aguirre was not wearing a seatbelt.
It was not raining or foggy at the time of the wreck and no citations were written, the master sergeant said.
