The mother of a Midlothian toddler who was beaten to death last summer has been charged with first-degree murder, authorities said today.
Marles Blackman, 37, was arrested this morning in Calumet Park.
Her son, Lavandis Hudson, was pronounced dead July 21 at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. A Cook County autopsy found the 2-year-old boy died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries due to child abuse.
Police said Blackman called 911 on July 20 from her apartment in the 3600 block of West 147th Place in Midlothian. The mother told rescuers she had been cooking dinner in the kitchen when she heard a thump and found her son unresponsive on the floor.
At the time, the mother was home alone with Lavandis and his younger sister, officials said. Lavandis later was airlifted to the Oak Lawn hospital, where doctors removed him from life-support machines that next afternoon after determining the child was brain dead.
Midlothian police Det. Sgt. Dan Delaney told the Tribune the 911 call came in as a possible seizure. But he said after autopsy results pointed to child abuse, authorities began investigating the toddler’s death as a homicide.
