A two-time state qualifier, Sandburg tennis player Molly Traverso looks forward to her senior season. At the Disco Dance Party and Indoor Adult/Junior tennis tournament in early June at the Oak Lawn Racquet Club, Traverso made it to the finals in the Girls’ 18 Singles division. Head coach Brian Ostrander notes that Traverso is the team leader and organizes activities and get-togethers for her teammates.

How long have you played tennis? Seven years.
What do you love most about tennis?
I love how [it’s] a combination of physical and mental toughness. It takes strategy and patience to be successful.
What are your goals for the upcoming season? How will you achieve them?
To have a winning record at first singles, help the team succeed at conference and sectionals and ultimately qualify for state. I plan to get there by improving my weaknesses and building on my strengths.
How do you motivate yourself to train during the summer?
By having the mentality that if you put the work in, you will see the results. I know that to achieve my goals I need to work hard and put the time in on the court and in the gym.
Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?
My dad because he always believes in me and pushes me to become a better athlete and competitor.
If you didn’t play tennis, what would you be doing?
I would be pursuing my love of music and theater that I’ve had since I was little.
What’s the best part about summer in Orland Park?
There are plenty of places to shop, eat and enjoy time off of school.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Roger Federer because he is a skilled athlete and a role model both on and off the court.
How do you beat the heat during workouts?
I drink lots of water and Gatorade to stay hydrated.
