Metra worker struck, killed near 47th Street

A Metra worker was struck and killed this afternoon on the Metra Electric District line near 47th Street, officials said.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. when the No. 223 train headed to Blue Island struck the worker near 47th Street, said Metra spokesman Mike Gillis.

Metra officials identified the man as Luis Mercado, 36, who was a trackman and had been employed by Metra since May 2001. He was working on a crew doing track maintenance, officials said in a statement.

Metra officials extended condolences to his family and friends.

"The entire Metra family is deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of one of our own," officials said in a statement.

Trains on the Electric line were experiencing delays due to the accident and the No. 326 train to depart South Chicago at 2:21 p.m. was canceled, according to Metra's Website. 

The circumstance leading up to the fatal accident  were under investigation, Gillis said.
