A 66-year-old man was fatally struck by a Metra train as he apparently tried to cross the train tracks in west suburban La Grange on Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The man was struck about 7:25 p.m. by an express train headed outbound from Chicago on the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Line, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation suggested the man had been trying to cross the tracks when he was hit, said Sgt. Marge Kielczynski of the La Grange Police Department.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:38 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family members.
Trains were stopped for about an hour in both directions after the man was struck, said Michael Gills, a Metra spokesman.
