A 19-year-old man who was shot multiple times in the Pilsen neighborhood in September died this afternoon, authorities said.
Francisco Merino, of the 900 block of West 19th Street, was shot multiple times on Sept. 27, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Merino was shot about 8 p.m. that evening in the 1800 block of South Morgan Street, police said.
Merino was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
A witness told police he heard several gunshots while sitting at a window in his home and saw a gunman in the passenger’s seat of a newer, white pickup truck pointing a gun at Merino, who was lying on the ground, according to a police report.
After the pickup sped away, the witness ran to the victim and saw him shot in the face and body. The witness’s father, who also heard the gunfire and rushed outside, placed Merino into the back seat of his station wagon with the intention of driving him to the hospital, the report said.
A Chicago Fire Department ambulance got to the scene and took Merino to Stroger in critical condition, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the face, two to the the chest, and two to the buttocks, the report said.
Blood and “several’’ shell casings were found on the ground at the mouth of a nearby alley. Police were reviewing footage from their nearby cameras as well as other neighbors’ private video surveillance, the report said.
Area Central detectives are investigating.
His death apparently marked the 449th homicide of the year.
