1 dead, another wounded in South Side shootings

A man was killed and a 16-year-old boy was wounded today in shootings on the South Side, officials said.

Late this morning, a 23-year-old man was fatally wounded in the city's South Shore neighborhood. That  shooting happened about 11:52 a.m. on the 7500 block of Yates Boulevard, said Police News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien.

The man was shot in the chest and was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, O'Brien said.

He was identified as Cortez Bailey of the 7600 block of South Kingston Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The circumstances leading up to Bailey's death were not immediately available.

About 2:53 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was wounded in an attack on the Far South Side, O'Brien said.

That shooting happened on the 13100 block of South Rhodes Avenue. The boy suffered a wound to his shoulder and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital where his condition had stabilized, O'Brien said.

As of 4:15 p.m., no one was in custody for the either of the attacks. Area South detectives were investigating.
