A 25-year-old man fatally shot in the Lawndale neighborhood Thursday has been identified.
The man killed was Eric Woods, who lived at the same address where the shooting happened, a representative of the Cook County medical examiner's office said this morning.
The shooting happened at 4:21 p.m. on the 900 block of South Springfield Avenue, police said.
The incident happened inside a two-story graystone building, officials said.
Woods was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead at 5:02 p.m., authorities said.
The door of the first-floor apartment was propped open by a piece of gray clothing on the ground, near where authorities found the injured man.
A wood flagpole hung from the iron holding up an unfinished roof over the front porch of the building. A Puerto Rican flag hung and moved only slightly in the light evening wind. An older Crown Victoria police car sat out front, two officers inside keeping warm. An SUV guarded the back of the building.
Police took a distraught witness to Area North for questioning. A detective walked three children out the front door and down the stairs.
The first to cross the tape to a waiting police SUV stepped over the yellow tape an under the red, and the detective held the tape up for the two smaller children to walk under.
Upstairs neighbors watched from their windows, opening one briefly to tell police when the building owner showed up.
The shooting happened on a short block between a viaduct and Arthington Street, a few blocks east of Pulaski Road.
Three other graystone buildings sit south of the crime scene, all with clean facades. One building is vacant and boarded up. One has a new iron porch but no front window, instead covered by a piece of foil-covered insulation. A third has two three brick pillars out front.
A woman left a neighboring building holding the hand of a child. She dropped her blue scarf as she crossed the street toward an apartment across the alley. An officer pointed it out. She picked it up, and continued walking west.
At about 7:45 p.m. a person was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Illinois Masonic Hospital after being shot near Wolcott and Armitage Avenues, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Will Knight.
The shooting happened as a vehicle was on the Diversey on ramp of southbound I-90, Illinois State Police officials said. The shooting happened at about 7:30 p.m., officials said.
No other details were immediately available.
