A Schiller Park man has been charged with bashing another man on the head with a landscaping rock during a brawl that followed a car chase through the Northwest Side this month.
The victim required five staples to close the wound after the alleged assault in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, prosecutors said.
Elvin Cotto, 26, was arrested Friday morning and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after he was identified by witnesses, prosecutors said. This morning Cook County Circuit Judge Adam D. Bourgeois Jr. ordered Cotto, a Schiller Park resident, held on $150,000 bond.
Cotto and others were damaging parked cars in the 6200 block of West Carmen Avenue just before 3 a.m. Oct. 9, prosecutors said, when men in a passing vehicle yelled at them to stop. Cotto and his alleged accomplices jumped in a Dodge Charger and followed the men, according to a police report.
The Charger’s driver rammed the victims’ car from behind, authorities said, and then drove off, with the victims pursuing on foot.
During the foot chase, one of the victims tripped and fell. By this point, Cotto and the others had parked their vehicle, and Cotto approached the man on the ground and smashed him over the head with a decorative stone described as “large,” prosecutors said.
Cotto and another person continued to beat the man, while a brawl broke out nearby, prosecutors said. The victim in that fight also required staples to close a gash the head, authorities said.
Witnesses picked Cotto out of a photo array, prosecutors said, while his alleged accomplices remain at large.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
