Following up on the success of its Lyric Unlimited performances of a mariachi opera last season in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood and Waukegan, Lyric Opera will present special concerts of mariachi and operatic music next month at Benito Juarez Community Academy in Pilsen.
Matthew Ozawa will direct “Canciones y arias” (“Songs and Arias”), an hourlong program of storytelling through song that weaves together traditional Mexican mariachi songs and classical arias by Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti and others. The performers will include Mariachi Aztlan from the University of Texas Pan-American, along with actress Suzette Mayobre and classical singers Sonja Krenek and Carlos A. Feliciano.
The performances are offered in partnership with the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Chicago Mariachi Project. They will take place at 7:30 p.m. April 11 and 12 at the Juarez academy, 1450 W. Cermak Road.
Tickets are $5 and may be obtained by calling 312-827-5600, or by visiting lyricopera.org/canciones. They also will be sold at the door beginning one hour before each performance.
