John D. Mengel has been named vice president and general manager at ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor. Mengel is responsible for the flat carbon steelmaking operations in Burns Harbor, Ind. and finishing operations in Columbus, Ohio, overseeing the day-to-day operations of both sites including safety, quality, productivity, budgeting and cost control and employee development. Mengel joined predecessor company Bethlehem Steel in June 1976 where he began his career in mechanical maintenance. He has held various positions of increasing responsibility within Burns Harbor and Plate Operations, most recently as chief operating officer, Plate Operations. He was instrumental in integrating the total USA Plate organization and most recently played a key role in the modernization of the Burns Harbor 160 Heat Treat Line. Mengel has a B.S. in industrial engineering from Penn State University.
