April 1999 -- Papows, then president of IBM's Lotus Development business, was discovered to have lied about receiving a doctorate from Pepperdine University. He had received a master's degree from that school and a doctorate from an unaccredited correspondence college in California. Initially the company stood by him, but he resigned in January 2000.
