Irish men move into NCAA soccer quarterfinals

Evan Panken broke a 2-2 tie in the 69th minute and Harrison Shipp added an insurance goal four minutes later as the Notre Dame men’s soccer team beat Wake Forest 4-2 in an NCAA tournament round of 16 match Sunday night at South Bend.

The win moved third-seeded Notre Dame (14-1-6) into the NCAA quarterfinals for the third time in the program’s 36-season history.

With a win over 11th seed Michigan State next weekend, the Irish would make their first appearance in the Final Four.  Notre Dame beat the Spartans 2-0 last month in East Lansing.

Shipp, a senior from Lake Forest, upped his team-leading goal total to 12 on a sliding chip shot to convert a perfect pass from Max Lachowecki.
