Two days after the 14-year-old son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey underwent surgery to remove a thyroid tumor, the family learned Friday that the growth was malignant.

McCaffrey said a course of treatment for Patrick McCaffrey, a seventh-grader, will be determined after meeting with doctors.

"(Wife) Margaret and I would like to thank everyone again for the outpouring of support from across the country for our son Patrick and family this past week," McCaffery said. "We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers."

McCaffrey first shared the news with his team on March 10, a day after the regular season ended and about a week before the Hawkeyes landed their first NCAA Tournament berth in eight years.

On Monday, the 54-year-old coach traveled with his team to Dayton for an NCAA play-in game, returned home to Iowa City on Tuesday night for his son's surgery on Wednesday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and then flew back to Ohio in the afternoon for the game against Tennessee, which Iowa lost in overtime.
