A tale of frustration and success at Hoosier Mama Pie Company

For several weeks now, Tribune colleague Max Rust has had a powerful hankerin' for a pecan pie from Hoosier Mama Pie Company, 1618 1/2 Chicago Ave. But satisfying that craving was not easy, as he recounts here:  

About 2.5 weeks ago: I inquire about placing an advance order for Thanksgiving, but am told pre-orders have ended.

9 a.m. Tuesday: I arrive only to be told they had sold out moments earlier.

7:30 a.m. today: It's half hour before the pie shop opens. At one point the line stretches an entire city block. I'm 15th in line, having arrived at 7 a.m.

8:10 a.m. today: I buy the last pecan maple and the last chocolate chess pies — much to the chagrin of the dozens of people in line behind me, including another Tribune employee.

1 p.m. today: I keep the pecan maple pie for private consumption but share the chocolate chess pie with my colleagues. Sweet.
