A gunman got out of a vehicle and opened fire, fatally striking a 34-year-old man Monday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood, Chicago police said.
The victim was identified this morning by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Willie Cunnings Jr., of the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue.
The shooting happened at 5:28 p.m. in the 2400 block of East 78th Street, near the victim's home, according to police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety.
Cunnings was shot in the head, the officer said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
Police didn't discuss a motive, but court records show that Cunnings had at least five drug convictions dating to 1998. The convictions include a case where prosecutors dropped several charges in exchange for him pleading guilty to criminal drug conspiracy charges, records show.
No arrests had been made this morning.
