Grete Waitz

She was a New York Marathon champion, world champion and Olympic silver medalist and a catalyst in the development of women's distance running. For more than two decades after the last of her nine New York Marathon wins in 1988, she became a force in promoting children's health and well-being through her sport. She died at age 57 after a six-year fight with cancer, a fight in which her quiet dignity never flagged. Tony Duffy, Getty Images
