FLASHBACK: 1941 In the early years of the University of Chicago's annual mustache-growing race, the loser was pitched into the drink. Later, the winner was thrown in too. By 1941, it was everyone who entered. Apparently, Americans' ambivalence about mustaches has been going on longer than we thought. Right now they're just about as uncool as uncool gets, with their connotations of '70s porn stars and Tom Selleck. Why, even Baby Boomers have finally shaved them off. And that means it's just about time for the campus style vanguard to rediscover the soup strainer.
