A 73-year-old man was being treated for smoke inhalation this evening after a fire destroyed his Burnside neighborhood apartment this evening, authorities said.
Firefighters were called to an apartment building in the 9000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue about 5:30 p.m.
The man, identified by family members as Theodore Washington, was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in fair-to-serious, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado.
The man’s apartment in the two-story building, which has about a dozen apartments and dates from the 1960s, was gutted by the fire. A cause for the fire had not yet been officially determined, according to fire officials.
