Ex-wife: Man killed by Des Plaines police `Lived a life he wanted to lead'

Police released no more details on Monday about the shooting by Des Plaines officers on Sunday that killed a 44-year-old father of five, but the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Carlos Salgado died of from a gunshot that struck him in the armpit.

Relatives, meanwhile, are trying to understand what happened.

Although Salgado was divorced from Denise Iglesias, 42, they remained close. Her ex-husband sent her a text on Sunday, wishing her a happy Mother’s Day.

A few hours later, Iglesias learned that Salgado — the father of her 26-year-old daughter — had been shot and killed in Des Plaines. Salgado was also the father of three other daughters and a son, Iglesias said.

“It’s been very hard for” my daughter, said Iglesias, of Glendale Heights, in a phone interview on Monday. “She’s too young for this too happen.”
