A 45-year-old man who worked in the film industry in Los Angeles was found dead over the weekend in a downtown Chicago hotel room, authorities and police sources said.
John O’Brien was found dead in a hotel room about 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel in the Gold Coast by former child actor Peter Billingsley, police sources said. O’Brien was a composer and music director for several films, including 2006’s “The Breakup,” filmed in Chicago.
One of the sources said O’Brien was supposed to go to a party related to this weekend’s Air & Water Show, but didn’t arrive. Billingsley went looking for him and found him in the hotel room, the source said.
Billingsley’s publicist did not return messages for comment Monday.
An autopsy performed Sunday on O’Brien was inconclusive, pending toxicological studies, according to the Medical Examiner’s office. But a police source said suspected narcotics and sleeping pills were found in the room.
Billingsley was best known for his role as Ralphie in the 1983 film “A Christmas Story,” and is the producer for a new musical version of the popular movie to be performed on stage in Chicago this December.
