Daley" href="/topic/politics/government/richard-m.-daley-PEPLT007475.topic">Mayor Richard Daley</a>, Grand Marshall for the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEFCC000010" title="Bud Billiken (fictional character)" href="/topic/arts-culture/culture/bud-billiken-%28fictional-character%29-PEFCC000010.topic">Bud Billiken</a> parade, rides down <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEHST001228" title="Martin Luther King Jr." href="/topic/arts-culture/culture/martin-luther-king-jr.-PEHST001228.topic">Martin Luther King</a> Drive in Chicago, greeting parade watchers. The parade, a community favorite, was created by Chicago Defender founder <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEBSL000037" title="Robert S. Abbott" href="/topic/economy-business-finance/media-industry/newspaper-magazine/robert-s.-abbott-PEBSL000037.topic">Robert S. Abbott</a> in 1929 as a treat for his newspaper delivery boys. It has turned into one of the largest parades in the country, and certainly the largest African-American event of its kind.
