Chicago police issued a community alert this afternoon warning about recent armed robberies of taxi drivers in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn District.

Police said the robber has hailed or called a cab on the North Side in the early morning hours and tells the driver to take him to addresses in the Clearing neighborhood, police said.

Once he is close to the destination, the robber pulls out a weapon and demands money, police said.

One robbery occurred about 3:50 a.m. May 4 on the 6900 block of West 63rd Place. The other happened about 3:45 a.m. May 6 on the 6900 block of West 63rd Street.

Police described the robber as a man between the ages of 24 and 30.

Police could not immediately confirm if the robber is the same man who attacked a taxi driver this morning on the 7600 block of West 60th Street in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the robberies should contact the Area Central Bureau of Detectives at (312) 747-8382.
