At least three people were fatally shot, including a mother and her 5-year-old son, another person stabbed to death and at lest four other people shot in attacks from Thursday to this morning in Chicago, authorities said.
Chavonne Brown, 31, and her son Sterling Sims, were found about 2:30 a.m. inside a three-flat brick apartment building in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue.
Freddy Lara, 31, was dead on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds in his West Lawn home in the 3600 block of West 64th Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Lara's cousin, who lives at the same apartment, found him bleeding from a wound to his stomach about 10:30 p.m., though police said he was believed to have been shot earlier in the day.
The victim was unresponsive when his relative came home from work and found him, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
Earlier, about 9:30 p.m., a 29-year-old man identified by the medical examiner's office as Aaron Knox was fatally stabbed or shot outside his home in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard, authoritites said.
The man was with another person he knew and got into a dispute that escalated into a fight outside the home, Mirabelli said. The other person went into the home, retrieved a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim. The man was discovered by emergency crews at the bottom of the home's front steps.
A person suspected of being the attacker was being questioned by police.
Knox was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital for treatment, and was declared dead at 4:06 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office, which said the man may have been shot. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.
