• A Northwest Side woman is accused of hurling her boyfriend's four newborn puppies into a pond and drowning them. Francis Blake, 45, of the 3500 block of North Narragansett Avenue, was charged Thursday with aggravated animal cruelty and animal torture. Read more

• A Lexington, Ky., man is accused of trying to extort money from a Loop executive by sending ambulances and hearses to his home to frighten his family and calling in a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of the executive's workplace, police said. John Holliman, 29, of 616 Smuggler's Notch Dr. in Lexington, was charged with felony theft, felony disorderly conduct and felony stalking, police said.  He is expected to appear in court today. • A village board member from Blue Island drowned while boating at a beach in northwest Indiana, Coast Guard officials said today. Michael Janko, a village trustee and lifetime resident of the south suburb, was found after a six-hour search of Lake Michigan near Wihala Beach in Whiting, Ind., said Boatswain’s Mate First-Class Derek Chabot of the U.S. Coast Guard Calumet Harbor station. • A man was shot to death in the South Loop and another man was killed in Lawndale in attacks across Chicago that also wounded five other people, including a 16-year-old boy. Andre Button, 33, of Dolton was shot around 11:25 p.m. Thursday as he sat in a parked car near 15th Place and Indiana Avenue in the South Loop, police said. He tried to drive away and crashed into two parked cars on Prairie Avenue. Read more
