Blake DeWitt was designated for assignment by the Cubs for a second time Sunday. The move makes room on the roster for Sunday's starting pitcher Travis Wood.
DeWitt, who was hitting .138, was also designated in the winter but re-signed with the Cubs after no team claimed him on waivers. The Cubs are hoping for the same process this time.
He was acquired from the Dodgers in the 2010 trade involving infielder Ryan Theriot and pitcher Ted Lilly.
Sunday's lineup behind Wood was changed when third baseman Ian Stewart became the latest clubhouse casualty of the flu. Woood started Sunday because Matt Garza had been sidelined with flu. Jeff Baker also had been ill, but returned to the team Sunday.
