Young thespians have the chance to be recognized for their talents at the third annual Illinois High School Musical Theater Awards on April 25. Hosted by Broadway in Chicago, the awards recognize achievements in musical theater at the high school level.
Illinois schools and students can nominate student performers who played a leading role in a full-length high school musical theater production during the 2013-2014 academic year. From the candidates, 12 actors and 12 actresses will be invited to particpate in the IHSMTA program on April 25, as well as receive tickets to see “Newsies” at the Oriental Theatre (24 W. Randolph St.).
During the IHSMTA program, finalists attend a workshop and perform for a panel of theater professionals and casting agents on the Broadway Playhouse stage at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut Place). One actor and one actress will be selected from the 24 finalists to receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City to particpate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards program from Jun. 25–Jul. 1. The NHSMTA program culminates in a performance at the Minskoff Theatre on June 30.
Besides recognizing individual talent at IHSMTA, the Grosh Scenic Design Award, a new award this year, will be given to a particpating school who demonstrated exceptional scenic design in a production.
