A 17-year-old boy was critically injured after being shot in the head during a fight with a 53-year-old male relative Saturday afternoon in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 5 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Estes Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

Paramedics took him to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva.

According to police, the teen's relative told police they were involved in a verbal altercation after the man saw his gun, a .38 caliber revolver on the teen's desk.

The man told police that he had hidden the gun in their garage but said the gun had disappeared about six months ago, according to the report.

After the teen picked up the gun, the two of them began to struggle for the gun causing it to accidentally discharge, police said.

Police found the boy, who was shot in the right cheek, in a bedroom on a couch. The gun was found lying on the floor and evidence technicians recovered it, according to the report.

Police are talking to the 53-year-old man but no charges have been filed as of this morning.
