"Giant Steps to Change the World"
By Spike Lee & Tonya Lewis Lee, illustrated by Sean Qualls
Simon & Schuster, $16.99, ages 6-9
"On some days your dreams may seem too far away to realize." What about those who dreamed before you? "They made giant steps to make the world a better place and left big shoes for you to fill." In the pictures that accompany the subsequent catalog of dreamers, we often don't see all of the earlier dreamers, glimpsing only their hands or their books or their silhouettes. They are not identified by name, though there are quotations from each on the endpapers of the book. Some are the oft-cited, such as Harriet Tubman; others are less familiar, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat or Dr. Ben Carson. Though an adult reading the book might want more data included, the effect for children might be liberating. They may see more easily what the patterns of actions are, rather than merely remembering famous names.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
