More than 20 years ago, a group of 7 women from Highland Park Hadassah founded "The Bookies" book discussion group. Today the group is has 25 members.
One thing to know about our book club:We meet as friends, grow intellectually, and each member donates $5 per meeting to support a good cause, Hadassah Youth Programs. Many of the original members are still in the group. "The Bookies" are all members of Hadassah, a non-profit women's organization that raises funds for medical research in Jerusalem. "The Bookies" group has been so successful that recently a new offshoot, "The Page Turners," was created using the same format and giving more women from the group a chance to enjoy their reading together.
Authors we'd most like to meet:Gail Tsukiyama, Thomas Man, Michael Chabon, Phillip Roth, Naomi Ragen, Amos Oz and Lisa See.
Our next two books:For our December meeting we will be reading "The Invisible Wall" by Harry Bernstein, and for January 2010, "March" by Geraldine Brooks
Seven books we loved:"Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, "The Street of a Thousand Blossoms" by Gail Tsukiyama, "The Color of Water" by James McBride, "The Pearl Diver" by Jeff Talarigo, "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini and "Not Me" by Michael Lavigne.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
