Two homemade bombs ripped through the finish line at the 117th Boston Marathon, killing three people and brutally inuring dozens of others. A manhunt for the two brothers believed to have planted the bombs ended with one brother dead and the other pulled bleeding from his hideout in a boat in suburban Boston. An MIT police officer was also killed in a shootout with the alleged bombers. Security was ratcheted up at the subsequent marathons, including unprecedented screening of marathon participants.
