The veteran was injured during a Jan. 2 game against the Oilers when Carcillo illegally checked Edmonton's Tom Gilbert into the boards. After being pushed into the boards on the hit which resulted in a seven-game suspension to Carcillo, Gilbert landed on the back of Carcillo's legs as both players were injured on the play. Carcillo had to be helped off the ice after the hit.
“Daniel Carcillo will undergo anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery on his left knee on Tuesday," Hawks team physician Michael Terry said. "This decision was made (Friday) after much evaluation and consideration of various options. We anticipate a full return in six months.”
The 26-year-old Carcillo had two goals, nine assists and 82 penalty minutes in 28 games with the Hawks. Carcillo signed a one-year, free-agent with the Hawks on July 1.
