Ruth, manager Miller Huggins and other Yankees argue with umpire Tommy Connolly after he called Ruth out on a controversial play at Comiskey Park on Aug. 1, 1920. Ruth hit a long fly into the fringe of the crowd that had overflowed onto the field. Chicago's Joe Jackson backed into the crowd, stumbled and disappeared in the mob. He emerged with the ball and Connolly ruled Jackson had held the ball long enough for Ruth to be called out.
