A man was killed early this morning after being struck by a car while walking in downtown Aurora, officials said.
Donald L. Early, 54, whose last known address is the Hesed House homeless shelter in the 600 block of S. River St., Aurora, was walking southbound on Broadway Avenue in Aurora just north of Spring Street when he was hit by a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 39-year-old woman from Montgomery, according to an emailed release from the Aurora Police Department.
The woman said she was traveling southbound on Broadway in the right-hand lane when she heard "a loud thump" in front of the vehicle. She stopped and found that she had struck Early, who was pronounced dead on the scene. The man will undergo an autopsy by the Kane County Coroner's office.
The woman was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the release, and the Aurora police are continuing to investigate. There were no signs of alcohol or drugs at the scene, police said.
