Naperville's Kevin Cordes broke his own American record in the 100-yard breaststroke twice while winning his third straight NCAA title in the event Friday in Austin, Texas.
Cordes, a junior at the University of Arizona, clocked 50.04 seconds in the final Friday night, shaving .51 from the mark he had set in the afternoon preliminaries. The prelims time, 50.55, was .15 set faster than the record he set last December 6.
The Neuqua Valley High School grad will seek his second straight NCAA title in the 200 breaststroke Saturday.
Cordes' NCAA meet got off to a rocky start Thurday with a false start on his leg of the 400 medley relay in the prelims. His team was a heavy favorite in the event.
A similar mistake by Cordes had cost the U.S. a gold medal in the medley relay at last year's World Championships.
