'Nobody kill anybody': Murder-free weekend urged in Baltimore

NU's Tsirtsis, Illini's Delgado take wrestling titles

Jason Tsirtsis of Crown Point, Ind., became the first Northwestern freshman to win an NCAA wrestling title.

And Illinois sophomore Jesse Delgado of Gilroy, Calif., won a second straight.

Tsirtsis, the No. 5 seed, beat 11th-seeded Joshua Kindig 3-1 in overtime in the 149-pound final Saturday night at Oklahoma City.

It was the third straight overtime win for Tsirtsis, a redshirt freshman.  He beat top-seeded Drake Houdashelt of Missouri in Friday’s semifinals and No. 4 Kendric Maple of Oklahoma in the quarterfinals.

In the 125-pound class, the top-seeded Delgado beat No. 2 seed Nahson Garrett of Cornell 3-2 in the final.

Earlier Saturday, Northwestern junior Mike McMullan made the top three in the NCAA Division I wrestling championships for the third straight year.

The heavyweight from Easton, Pa., took third by beating Iowa’s Bobby Telford 3-1.  McMullan finished second last year and third as a freshman.
