Casting for “Amazing Grace,” the new musical set to begin performances at the Bank of America Theatre on October 9, was announced on Wednesday. The show features music and lyrics by Christopher Smith with a book by Smith and Arthur Giron. It tells the story of the titular hymn and its multifaceted composer, John Newton.
In addition to the previously announced Josh Young (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) as Newton, Erin Mackey (“Wicked” and “Chaplin”) will play Mary Catlett, Tom Hewitt (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) is Captain Newtown, Chuck Cooper (“Act One”) is Thomas, Chris Hoch (“Matilda”) is Major Archibald Gray, Stanley Bahorek (“25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”) is Robert Haweis, Harriett D. Foy (“Mamma Mia”) is Princess Peyai and Laiona Michelle (“Book of Mormon” national tour) will portray Nanna.
Gabriel Barre will direct the musical and Christopher Gattelli (“Newsies” and “The Jungle Book” at the Goodman) will choreograph. The show has Broadway aspirations, but, as of yet, no Broadway plans have been announced.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
