When Ken Kesey lost his son Jed in a college bus accident in 1984, "his hair turned gray almost overnight," wrote journalist Chip Brown, and the author stopped publishing for a time. In 1992, Kesey released the novel "Sailor Song," in which the main character copes with the loss of a child.
