An accountant from Aurora accused of embezzling more than a quarter-million dollars from his employers has been charged with theft, DuPage County authorities said today.
Bail was set at $250,000 for Shaun Horan, 31, of the 1600 block of Blackwell Lane, who is charged with theft over $100,000.
DuPage authorities allege that between 2007 and 2011, while he was employed at an Oak Brook company called Resource One, Horan stole $285,000 from the company by writing unauthorized checks to himself.
He tried to cover the alleged theft by altering or deleting entries in the company’s books, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, but a co-worker discovered the thefts.
“When a company is defrauded, it must make up for its losses by raising costs, which ultimately means higher prices for consumers,” Berlin said. “Additionally, this can also result in less pay for employees and even job losses.”
If convicted, Horan could face a 4- to 15-year prison term.
