5 hurt in Homan Square neighborhood wreck

A traffic crash on the West Side at Independence and Fillmore left five people hospitalized this afternoon.

Two cars collided at Independence Boulevard and Fillmore Street, police spokesman Veejay Zala said.

An EMS Plan I, which automatically sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was activated at 4:50 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Five people were hospitalized. One was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious, while two others were also taken there in fair condition. Two others were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, one is good condition and one in fair, the fire department said.

The ambulance plan was secured at 5:12 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.
