5. Kelly Hogan, 'I Like to Keep Myself in Pain' (Anti)

One of the great if most underappreciated voices of the last couple of decades stands at the crossroads of country, soul and pop. She works with a batch of terrific songwriters -- Vic Chesnutt, Robyn Hitchcock, Stephin Merritt, among others -- and an ace band anchored by multi-instrumentalist Scott Ligon and soul greats Booker T. Jones and James Gadsen. But it all comes down to Hogan's deft production and nuanced singing on the classic vocal album of 2012.
