8. 'The Omen' (1976)

Jerry Goldsmith (above), one of filmdom's most prolific composers won the only Oscar of his career for this over-the-top score, yet another movie about the offspring of Satan. A seemingly 10,000-voice choir belts out "Ave Satani!" ("Hail! Satan!" in Latin) as Goldsmith's equally booming orchestral accompaniment raises the rafters. But the quasi-religious, quasi-classical overtones of Goldsmith's music was very influential on not only the movie's many sequels, but a slew of other demonic film scores including Wendy Carlos' and Rachel Elkind's "The Shining" and Elliot Goldenthal's more restrained "Interview with the Vampire." Goldsmith, whose early training included macabre-flavored scoring assignments for the short-lived Boris Karloff anthology "Thriller" and "The Twilight Zone," also provided music for several other frightmare flicks: 1971's "The Mephisto Waltz," another Satanic-themed cult fave; 1972's "The Other"; and the 1979 sci-fi horror classic "Alien" among them.
