Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears

The members may be the spiritual descendants of James Brown, but Austin, Texas-based garage funk band Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears is modern where it counts. The group has released two scorching, well-liked long players (2009's "Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!" and the recent "Scandalous"), both produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno. It also has toured exhaustively, sold respectably and generated the obligatory controversial blog hit, "B----, I Love You." Lewis, on the phone from Montreal, where he recently moved to be near his girlfriend, talked about finally quitting his day job, visiting the legendary Mustang Ranch (documented on the new "Scandalous" track of the same name) and his beef with Al Green.
